Shacoya’s Story

Embracing Connection & Support

When we first met Shacoya, she was a Senior Customer Service Representative who had recently begun her journey at Synchrony. She spoke passionately about the warmth and inclusivity she felt throughout the organization from day one, and how that helped her feel seen, supported and empowered her to bring her best self to work.

Now, more than five years later, we caught up with Shacoya and it’s clear that her story has been one of connection, support and continued self-discovery.

Since we last spoke, Shacoya transitioned to the banking side of our business, where she now serves as an IRA Specialist. Her role involves managing retirement accounts and supporting a wide range of banking services. The move wasn’t immediate, her first interview for the position was delayed due to the pandemic, but she stayed open-minded and took on a rotation that eventually led to her landing the role. Today, she’s thriving in her position and looking ahead to her next growth opportunity and considering all of her options whether it is a new role or a development program.

Her mindset of flexibility and openness has continued to guide her. “If it’s for you, it’s for you,” she says, reflecting on her journey. That patience and perseverance have paid off not just professionally, but personally as well.

Outside of work, Shacoya recently graduated from cosmetology school, a milestone she’s incredibly proud of. While her tenacity got her through a full schedule of both work and school, she credits the flexibility and support from her manager to be able to be fully present and thrive. Her manager supported her every step of the way, adjusting her schedule so she could attend classes and finish her program. Now, she’s building a clientele and exploring her passion for hair alongside her career at Synchrony.

Even though she’s no longer in the office every day, Shacoya remains deeply connected to her team. Quarterly meetups, like escape room challenges and movie nights, help maintain a sense of camaraderie and purposeful connection. She’s also still active in our Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), including PRIDE+, Veterans+ and EnAbled+, which continue to provide her with community and connection across departments.

Looking ahead, Shacoya says she’s excited to keep learning and growing. Nearly a decade into her time at Synchrony, she says it doesn’t feel like it’s been nearly that long. Whether she’s helping customers, connecting with her team or pursuing her personal goals, Shacoya’s story is a testament to what’s possible when you’re supported to do good work and embrace opportunities when they come your way.
